Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton believes his future lies at St James' Park after opening talks with the club.

Barton, who joined the Magpies from Manchester City in 2007, has a year remaining on his current deal, but is hoping to extend his contract beyond 2012.

"I've started discussions with the club, and everything seems to be going in the right direction," Barton told the Newcastle Evening Chronicle.

"So hopefully we'll get that sorted as soon as possible, and I can just concentrate on doing my utmost for Newcastle United. I want to stay here."

Should Barton put pen to paper, he would follow Andy Carroll, Steven Taylor and Mike Williamson in committing their future to the club under new manager Alan Pardew.
