Paul Scholes has fuelled speculation that he will retire in the summer by refusing to confirm he will be at Manchester United next season.

The 36-year-old midfielder made his return from an eight-week layoff in the 3-2 win against Blackpool on Tuesday evening, creating Dimitar Berbatov's winner with a trademark pass.

That was his 14th Premier League appearance of a season that is poised to end in glory - United are five points clear at the top of the table - but may also be his last as a professional.

"I don't know what I'm doing next year," he told MUTV. "I just want to concentrate on getting back playing for now. I like to have a week or two off at Christmas. This one just stretched out a bit longer, which has not been ideal. Hopefully in the next few weeks I can regain some fitness."

Ryan Giggs, a year older than Scholes, pledged his future to United last week by confirming he intends to extend his career by at least another 12 months.
