Newcastle are on the verge of completing the loan signing of midfielder Stephen Ireland from Aston Villa.

Ireland only joined Villa from Manchester City in the summer, as part of the deal that saw James Milner head to the City of Manchester Stadium, but has fallen out with new manager Gerard Houllier after a series of lacklustre displays.

After negotiations between the two clubs the Magpies have reportedly agreed to pay £40,000 of Ireland's current £65,000-a-week wages to sign the creative midfielder until the end of the season, and Houllier is happy to let the 24-year-old leave.

Ireland is believed to have travelled to Tyneside to undergo a medical ahead of Monday's transfer deadline.

Villa are reportedly on the verge of a loan signing of their own, with American midfielder Michael Bradley expected to move to the club on loan before the window closes.
