Newcastle United have rejected a £30 million bid for striker Andy Carroll from an "unnamed Premier League club", widely reported to be Liverpool.

Liverpool look set to lose star striker Fernando Torres, despite rejecting a transfer request from the 26-year-old on Friday, with Chelsea preparing a £50 million bid for the Spain international.

The Reds have already moved to sign Uruguay striker Luis Suarez from Ajax to bolster their attacking options and England international Carroll is the preferred replacement should Torres leave.

Newcastle have spent much of the transfer window insisting the Carroll, 22, is not for sale amid Tottenham's concerted pursuit, and now it remains to be seen if their resolve to hang on to their 11-goal hitman can be broken during the remaining hours of the transfer window.
