England boo-boys' abuse was personal - Ashley Cole

Ashley Cole believes the abuse he received from England fans in the past was not a criticism of his ability on the pitch.

Cole was the surprise recipient of the fans' player of the year award, beating Steven Gerrard and Adam Johnson to become the first defender to win the accolade.

The award comes after the Chelsea full-back was the subject of jeers from sections of the crowd during England's 5-1 win over Kazakhstan in October 2008, after his wayward pass led to Zhambyi Kukeyev's goal.

But Cole believes the booing stemmed from reports surrounding his private life and his marriage to Cheryl Cole, and he feels he has finally started to win over his critics.

"Every player makes mistakes on the pitch but I don't think it was about that mistake I think it was more personal and so it hurt even more," Cole told FATV. "Every time I put on an England shirt I try my hardest and I want to win and now the fans have started to see that I just want to win and play for my country.

"It came as a big surprise; I never thought I would get this with the other players in the running. I am very privileged and proud that the fans have appreciated what I have done."
