AC Milan midfielder Andrea Pirlo has been ruled out for a further six weeks after suffering a knee injury in training.

Pirlo has been out of action since December with a thigh strain, but he was due to return to action on Saturday against Parma.

Having strained his knee ligaments in training on Friday, though, he is now unlikely to feature again before the end of March.

A club statement read: "The chief medic of AC Milan, Dr Gianluca Melegati, confirms the tests on Andrea Pirlo showed a second degree strain of the collateral medial ligament in the right knee.

"The recovery process is expected to last around six weeks."

The injury is likely to keep Pirlo, 31, out of the Champions League games against Tottenham as well as league matches against Parma, Chievo, Napoli, Juventus, Bari and Palermo.
