UEFA has confirmed it has opened disciplinary proceedings against Milan midfielder Gennaro Gattuso.

The Italian whipped up a storm of controversy on Wednesday evening with his antics during and after Milan's defeat to Tottenham in the Champions League.

Gattuso was involved in a series of clashes with Tottenham players during the game, had a spat on the touchline with Spurs assistant Joe Jordan and then caused a melee at full time when clashing heads with Jordan.

He received only a yellow card for a foul on Steven Pienaar, which rules him out of the return leg, and UEFA is to look into the incidents.

UEFA's Control and Disciplinary Body will meet next Monday to discuss the case.

Gattuso came out after the game to apologise for his clash with Jordan, while Spurs manager Harry Redknapp questioned the wisdom of his methods, but it remains to be seen if that saves him from a sanction.
