Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed he expects Rio Ferdinand to miss Manchester United's crucial midweek trip to Chelsea.

Ferdinand has been struggling with a calf injury suffered in the warm-up against Wolves, and Ferguson revealed during Friday's press conference that the England captain is targeting a return against Liverpool at Anfield in a week's time.

"Not much has changed on the injury front," Ferguson said. "We're trying to get Ryan [Giggs] fit for the Wigan game. Michael Owen is back training and could be available for tomorrow. Rio Ferdinand and Jonny Evans should both be back for Liverpool next weekend.

"Ji-sung Park is still two weeks away. Anderson will probably be back in three weeks, he's back in Portugal now and we'll have to see how he progresses.

"[Antonio] Valencia is doing well in training but it's difficult to assess when he'll be back. We have to make a decision as to how he feels given he's been out for so long. He could be back in two weeks hopefully."

Ferguson also raised concerns over the Wigan pitch, which has recently been relaid but may still be needing time to knit together in order for a smooth surface.

"Wigan are a team who play fantastic football. It's obviously a concern that they've relaid the pitch, although I understand it's okay. It'll be a difficult game but at this time of the season they're all difficult. It's important that we keep our momentum going because the team who is most consistent will win the league."
