Fernando Torres has conceded he will not hit top gear at Chelsea until he builds a greater understanding of how Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka like to play.

Carlo Ancelotti has experimented with Torres as a lone striker and as part of a partnership since bringing him in from Liverpool, but he is yet to see the Spain striker hit the back of the net in a blue shirt.

Ancelotti faces a selection headache ahead of the do-or-die clash with Manchester United on Tuesday, knowing that failure to win will spell the end of the Londoners' title challenge.

Torres has hinted that his preference is to play with a partner, having been impressed with Chelsea's performance in the later stages during the win in Copenhagen last week, when he was paired with Drogba.

"With two lines of four the other day the team played really well and the balance was really good, compact and they did well, sometimes playing balls behind the centre-backs or sometimes between the lines, and Nico [Anelka] likes to play like this," Torres said.

"It is my job to understand the game of Nico or the game of Didier Drogba, and to be involved in the routine of the team and know the quality of the players so that's what I am trying to do now."

Torres admits that Chelsea, who are 15 points behind United having played a game less, need to take all three points from the Stamford Bridge clash.

"This will be an interesting game because it can make us come back to fight for the title, it is one of the most important games of the season right now, and if we win this one we are closer to them and we have will still have one more game against them," he said.
