Bolton midfielder Stuart Holden has accepted a "sincere" apology from Jonny Evans, shortly after learning he is facing six months on the sidelines following a challenge from the Manchester United man.

USA international Holden had 26 stitches inserted in a deep gash in his knee and faces an operation following an MRI scan.

Evans was shown a straight red card for his challenge on Holden during Manchester United's 1-0 win over Bolton.

There appeared little malice in the tackle and that is a view shared by Holden. He wrote on his Twitter account: "Just had sincere phone call from Jonny Evans wishing me best in recovery, def wasn't intentional just unfortunate part of game."

Holden is confident of making a full recovery, as he said: "I can promise you all I will come back stronger and better than before. Have had bad luck in the past and will continue to beat it."
