Jens Lehmann's second stint at Arsenal has stepped up a gear with an outing against Wigan's reserves, but the keeper had a mixed day in a 2-1 defeat.

Lehmann has been drafted in as cover on account of a goalkeeping injury crisis and there are suggestions he could feature for the first team - with Manuel Almunia not impressing against West Brom.

However, Lehmann did not overly impress himself in Tuesday's reserve clash. He had a horror moment towards the end of the first half, conceded twice and produced some shaky play in the second half.

After making a couple of comfortable saves, Lehmann had a moment to forget a minute before the break as he air-kicked a backpass and the ball rolled inches wide of goal.

The German made a couple of routine saves in the first half and he was also involved in a spiky moment as he complained to the referee when Adam Buxton appeared to challenge him late.

Jeremie Aliadiere was handed an outing by Arsenal but he had a tough task up front as he was forced to play for much of the game as a lone striker following the dismissal of Ignasi Miquel for a professional foul.

Being a man down put pressure on Arsenal and Lehmann was left exposed as Callum McManaman raced clear on 53 minutes before rounding the German and slotting home.

Lehmann was almost left with egg on his face an hour into the game, as he ventured out of his area only to lose out and it took a fine saving block from Daniel Boateng to prevent a goal.

Wigan continued to dominate with their man advantage and Lehmann was beaten again seven minutes from time as Joe Holt rounded the keeper and slotted home.

Arsenal's second string grabbed a late consolation when Rhys Murphy stroked home a penalty.
