Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed that defender Alan Hutton is unlikely to play again this season as he requires knee surgery.

Hutton sustained a meniscus tear in training on Thursday and was absent for the club's 0-0 draw with Wigan Athletic on Saturday.

It was already expected that the Scotland international would miss both legs of the upcoming Champions League quarter-final against Real Madrid, but now Spurs say he is unlikely to feature again this season.

A club statement said: "Alan Hutton is to undergo knee surgery after scans confirmed the defender had torn his lateral meniscus.

"The Scotland international injured his knee in training on Thursday and the operation is likely to rule him out for the rest of the season."

Hutton has started 19 Premier League games and four Champions League ties for Tottenham this season.
