Manchester City climbed above Chelsea and into third in the Premier League table by hammering Sunderland 5-0 at Eastlands - a result that leaves the Black Cats just six points above the drop zone.

Adam Johnson, a surprise inclusion in the starting XI, slotted City into the lead on nine minutes after exchanging passes with Yaya Toure, before Carlos Tevez doubled the advantage from the spot five minutes later. The Argentinean striker dusted himself off to score from 12 yards after being bundled over in the area by a clumsy challenge from Phil Bardsley.

City were rampant for the first half hour, bypassing Sunderland's ineffectual midfield at will, but the visitors came back into the game in the late stages of the opening period. Asamoah Gyan, who scored Ghana's equaliser at Wembley in midweek, fired narrowly wide with a left-footed volley from 20 yards.

But any hopes of a Sunderland fightback were ended decisively on 62 minutes when David Silva netted in fortunate circumstances after Mario Balotelli's shot ricocheted into his path six yards out. And Steve Bruce's day worsened five minutes later as Patrick Vieira, who had just arrived as a substitute, diverted Aleksander Kolarov's cross into the net with the aid of his thigh.

Sunderland were in freefall by this point, and skipper Lee Cattermole demonstrated their distress by playing a pass straight into the path of Toure, who needed just two touches to stick the ball in the back of the net.

Bobby Zamora showed Fulham what they had been missing with two quick-fire goals to help his side move into the top half of the table with a 3-0 win against Blackpool.

Making his first start for Fulham since breaking his leg in September, Zamora scored his first goal from open play since August and swiftly followed it with a second just five minutes later.

Having made three appearances from the bench since breaking his leg in September, Zamora showed no signs of rustiness as he latched onto James Beattie's wayward pass and thundered towards the goal before smashing the ball high into the Blackpool net.

And his second further showcased his striker's credentials, flicking the ball past Richard Kingson with a backwards header from Danny Murphy's free-kick in the corner.

Fulham were deserving of their lead at half-time, but they were grateful to Chris Baird for maintaining their two-goal advantage when Brett Ormerod beat Mark Schwarzer to Craig Cathcart's long ball, but his header was headed off the line by Baird.

Blackpool provided more of a challenge in the second half but they created few chances and their chances of taking anything back to Bloomfield Road were all but ended when Dickson Etuhu sealed the victory for Fulham after 72 minutes, poking the ball home from close range from Brede Hangeland's rebound effort after Clint Dempsey's header clattered the post.

Cathcart had the chance to score a consolation goal for Blackpool deep into added time, but failed to direct his header under the crossbar.
