United failed with Raul bid
Christoph Metzelder has revealed Raul shunned Manchester United in favour of a move to Schalke.
Raul's career looked on a downward spiral when he was cast adrift by Real Madrid, but he has revived his fortunes in Germany and is two games away from a Champions League final appearance.
Schalke have been a revelation in Europe and dumped out holders Inter Milan this week.
Up next is a clash with United and it appears that if things had turned out differently Raul could have been playing in red.
"Manchester United tried to sign him," Schalke defender Metzelder said. "He talked about it to me.
"He got to know Germany in the World Cup 2006. I told him he had to experience it. He's a big player and his influence is great."
