Ireland ruled out for remainder of the season

On-loan Newcastle United midfielder Stephen Ireland has been ruled out for the remainder of the season due to injury, accelerating his return to parent club Aston Villa.
The 24-year-old picked up the ankle injury after coming on as a substitute against Blackpool at the weekend, a setback that will ensure he misses the Magpies' final four games of the season.
Ireland made just two substitute appearances for Alan Pardew's side since joining on a temporary basis in January, after initially missing games due to an existing knee problem.
"[Ireland] sustained the injury during Saturday's draw away at Blackpool in the Premier League, and after having it assessed by Newcastle United's medical staff he will be unavailable for the remainder of the campaign," a club statement said.
Ireland left Manchester City amid much acrimony in August, but also failed to settle at Aston Villa. After a fall-out with Gerard Houllier he joined the Magpies in January but his spell there has been wracked by problems of form and fitness.
