Real appeal UEFA decision over Barca complaint

UEFA has confirmed Real Madrid have appealed the governing body's decision to dismiss the club's complaints about the conduct of Barcelona players in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final between the two Spanish rivals.

Both clubs made representations to UEFA after a stormy first leg at the Bernabeu, although the organisation subsequently dismissed the complaints from both sides in advance of the second leg, which ended in a 1-1 draw to see Barcelona through to the final, winning 3-1 on aggregate.

Real have now appealed against UEFA's decision to throw out the club's complaint regarding Barcelona's "unsportsmanlike behaviour" and the red card shown to Pepe for a challenge on Barcelona's Dani Alves.

"Real Madrid CF have appealed against the UEFA Control and Disciplinary Body's decision earlier this week to reject the Spanish club's protests in relation to the UEFA Champions League semi-final first leg between Madrid and FC Barcelona on 27 April," read a UEFA statement.

"The protests lodged by Real Madrid, which were rejected, were against the behaviour of Barcelona players during the match, and against the red card shown to Madrid defender Pepe. The UEFA Appeals Body hearing on this case is scheduled to take place on Monday 16 May."

Following a controversial first leg, Real face a UEFA hearing on Friday relating to Pepe's red card, Jose Mourinho's dismissal and the coach's post-match press conference, during which he railed against a supposed Barcelona conspiracy.

Barcelona goalkeeper Jose Pinto is also in trouble after being shown a red card for his part in a half-time brawl in the first leg.
