Ferguson charged by the FA

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has been charged with improper conduct by the Football Association, over comments he made about referee Howard Webb in the build-up to his side's Premier League match against Chelsea last week.

The charge is unusual, as Ferguson's comments about Webb were generally positive, but they nevertheless contravened FA rule E3 - which forbids passing any judgement on officials ahead of games.

"We are getting the best referee, there is no doubt about that," Ferguson said two days prior to the Sunday game, which United won 2-1. "But (getting a bad decision) is definitely our big fear.

"We have the players to do it all right. We just hope it's our turn for a little bit of luck."

Ferguson has until 4pm on May 16 to respond to the charge.

The Scot has only just served a five-match suspension, for comments he made about another referee, Martin Atkinson, last time his side played Chelsea.

However, it appears unlikely that Ferguson will be handed a similarly tough punishment after his latest indiscretion.
