Wayne Rooney may be in for an interesting morning after becoming embroiled in a Twitter row which saw the striker threatened with a golf club.

The Manchester United striker came in for abuse from a follower who taunted Rooney saying: "Rooney ya fat whore ill smash ya head in with a pitchin wedge an bury ya with a ballast fork ya fat ugly lil nonse."

Rather than ignoring the abuse, Rooney responded encouraging his follower meet him at United's Carrington training ground to carry out his threat.

"I will put u asleep within 10 seconds hope u turn up if u don't gonna tell everyone ur scared u little nit. I'll be waiting," Rooney said.

To which the person taunting Rooney said: "I'll be down tomorrow in my twin turbo nissan micra."

The escalation of the row prompted other users of the social network site to wade in and a short time later, Rooney attempted to defuse the situation by adding: "Haha bit of banter and people go nuts chill all people."
