Diego Maradona is chasing the signature of Atletico Madrid striker Diego Forlan as his first piece of transfer business at new Dubai-based club Al Wasl.

Forlan, who impressed at the 2010 World Cup to win the Golden Ball award, has had a frustrated campaign and looks set to leave the club along with fellow striker Sergio Aguero.

However, while a host of European clubs including Juventus, Tottenham and Besiktas are interested in Forlan, Maradona's new side Al Wasl are hoping to strike a deal that would put them firmly on the football map.

"He [Forlan] is one of the big names on the line, I can't deny that but we still haven't closed this deal. We are working on it," Al Wasl chief executive officer Ashraf Mohammad told Gulf News. "We are certainly doing our best to bring top things to this country, because the UAE deserves it."

Al Wasl have already stated that Maradona would be given control of the club's recruitment drive and is focused on bringing in attacking players as a starting point.

"Mr Maradona told us where our weaknesses lie after watching the videos of our matches and we are now working towards correcting that," said Mohammad. "He's talking about a striker and I think that we've given him that opportunity."
