Newcastle have tested Lorient's resolve by upping their offer for Lorient striker Kevin Gameiro to £10 million.

The Magpies face stiff competition for Gameiro's services, with Valencia being the Frenchman's preferred destination.

Tottenham have also shown interest in the 24-year-old over the past two months, as have Sunderland, but Newcastle boss Alan Pardew is hopeful their improved bid will be enough to lure the centre forward to St James' Park.

Meanwhile, Lens starlet Mehdi Abeid is heading to the north-east after compatriot Hatem Ben Arfa gave him an insight into life at Newcastle.

Abeid, 18, said: "I have had contact dating back some time and I visited the facilities there last week. I even trained with the reserve team.

"The leaders of the club told me about their plans and that they will rely on me for next season. For my part, I intend to give everything to develop in the Premier League.

"I already discussed things with Hatem Ben Arfa and Cheik Tioté and they encouraged me and welcomed my signature."
