Stoke defender Ryan Shawcross has been called up to the England squad for the friendly with Egypt on Wednesday, just hours after being dismissed for his leg-breaking challenge on Arsenal's Aaron Ramsey.

Shawcross has been rewarded for some consistent performances for the Potters, but can hardly have asked for worse timing given the media attention he has received over the tackle in Stoke's 3-1 defeat on Saturday evening.

Fabio Capello has also chosen to call up Stephen Warnock and Leighton Baines as cover for Ashley Cole, who is out with a broken ankle. There is also a place for Birmingham goalkeeper Joe Hart and West Ham striker Carlton Cole.

England squad: James (Portsmouth), Green (West Ham), Hart (Birmingham), Brown (Man Utd), Terry (Chelsea), Upson (West Ham), Lescott (Man City), Shawcross (Stoke), Baines (Everton), Warnock (Aston Villa), Milner (Aston Villa), Beckham (AC Milan), Walcott (Arsenal), Lampard (Chelsea), Barry (Man City), Gerrard (Liverpool), Carrick (Man Utd), Wright-Phillips (Man City), Downing (Aston Villa), Heskey (Aston Villa), Defoe (Tottenham), Rooney (Man Utd), Crouch (Tottenham), C Cole (West Ham).
