Owen wins new contract at United

Manchester United have handed a new contract to striker Michael Owen.
Owen's contract with the club was due to expire this summer and despite him playing just a bit-part role in the past 12 months, he had spoken positively about earning a fresh deal.
Manager Sir Alex Ferguson is likely to bring in new faces in the coming weeks and with Wayne Rooney and Javier Hernandez the preferred forward partnership, Owen's role is likely to be one of impact player.
The striker's impact likely to be limited, but Ferguson clearly feels the forward has a role to play as he has handed a fresh deal to the former Liverpool man.
"Michael has proved to be a top footballer," Ferguson told the club's official website. "It's unfortunate Michael didn't get more opportunities but the form of Chicharito put everyone in the shade and his partnership with Rooney proved invaluable. I am delighted Michael is staying for a further year and we will look to give him more opportunities in the new season."
Owen said: "I'm delighted to have agreed a one-year extension to my contract. To play alongside so many great players, under an exceptional manager, and in front of so many incredibly passionate supporters, is a real inspiration. I can't wait for next season to start."
