England manager Fabio Capello blamed fatigue at the end of a long season for his player's below-par display.

When asked what was missing, the Italian told ITV Sport: "In this period, always the energy. You can see the Switzerland players were fresher. They have had a different season.

"In the second half we played not so bad, a good reaction. We had three clear chances to score goals but at the end of the game, in the last 10 minutes, some players were without energy.''

With three matches remaining, England could now face a tight battle with Montenegro for top spot in Group G. Capello felt there were positives, however.

He said: "We recovered the result after 2-0, the reaction of the team and we had chances to score the third goal. But we suffered because we arrived without energy.''

Goalscorer Ashley Young felt the Three Lions should have gone on to beat Switzerland after his early second-half equaliser.

When asked if he felt England deserved better, Aston Villa forward Young told ITV Sport: "I think we did, especially in the second half. We created chances and on another day they would have gone in. It wasn't to be and we have got a point, but we are disappointed with that.''

England had opportunities to snatch victory late on with Darren Bent squandering chances.

Young added: "I was thinking we were going to see the ripple of the net but it wasn't to be. He is disappointed but we created chances.''

Young impressed in England's last qualifier against Wales and was frustrated not to start.

"Of course I was disappointed to be on the bench but I took it on the chin and wanted to come on and do the best I can," Young said. "I thought I did well when I came on but everybody in the dressing room is disappointed we didn't get the win.

"It is always nice to get on the scoresheet but it would have been a better feeling if we had got the three points.''
