Aston Villa will be willing to allow defender Carlos Cuellar to return to his former club Rangers if the price is right.

It is understood that Villa are hoping to receive around £3 million for Cuellar, who joined them from the Gers three years ago for nearly £8 million.

Rangers have already made a bid of £1.5 million for Cuellar but they will need to double their offer if they are to re-sign the Spaniard, who is currently sidelined after undergoing knee surgery at the end of last season.

New Villa boss Alex McLeish, meanwhile, has refused to rule out moves for his former Birmingham players amid reports he is keen to sign centre-back Scott Dann and goalkeeper Ben Foster.

"I don't think it would put me off if I thought a player could improve Aston Villa then why not?" he said in the Birmingham Mail. "I know there are many great Blues players there but the policy I've always maintained at any club I've ever been at is never to talk about any other club's players.

"I'm getting bombarded over the last couple of days with text messages from agents and clubs asking me about this player and that player and if I want them. We are just going to assess things at the moment, look at the squad."
