Arsenal could face Alvarez disappointment

Arsenal could face strong late competition from Inter for the signature of Velez Sarsfield midfielder Ricky Alvarez, according to Palermo president Maurizio Zamparini.

The Gunners had reportedly been close to confirming a move worth around £13.5 million for the 23-year-old Argentine, but it appears they could now face disappointment after Inter entered the race to sign the player.

Zamparini, who previously claimed Palermo's interest in the player had come to nothing as a result of Arsenal's approach, now believes the north London club have suffered a similar setback after the Nerazzurri swooped.

"We were close to signing [Ricky] Alvarez for half the price they will now pay for him but my colleagues took it easy and no agreement was reached," Zamparini bemoaned to Sky Italia.

"Where he will go? He was going to sign for Arsenal but Inter Milan made a move and that is where I believe he will go."

Velez have confirmed that both the player and club are considering a number of offers in England and Italy.

"Ricky Alvarez could be in England or Italy, because we are negotiating with several clubs in those countries," said Velez chief Fernando Raffaini. "Until it is signed, nothing is confirmed, but many clubs are interested: Inter, Roma and Arsenal, for example."
