Handed first senior cap in England's 2-0 defeat to Chile at Wembley last November. Forster impressed for Celtic this season and broke the Scottish record for consecutive minutes without conceding a goal - although, it is Scotland.

GK
Ben Foster
  • Ben Foster
  • Age 31
  • Club West Brom
  • Caps 6
  • Goals 0

The ex-Manchester United goalkeeper quit international football in May 2011. A Hodgson signing at West Brom, injuries and the form of Joe Hart have hampered his international career thus far.

GK
Joe Hart
  • Joe Hart
  • Age 27
  • Club Man. City
  • Caps 39
  • Goals 0

Had to look on from the bench as Robert Green and David James played at World Cup 2010, with unfortunate consequences. First choice this time around.

DEF
Leighton Baines
  • Leighton Baines
  • Age 29
  • Club Everton
  • Caps 22
  • Goals 1

Everton's chief left-back who continues to get better and better. Capable of knocking in a free-kick or two, Baines has established himself as Hodgson's first choice ahead of Ashley Cole. The Premier League's leading mod.

DEF
Gary Cahill
  • Gary Cahill
  • Age 28
  • Club Chelsea
  • Caps 22
  • Goals 2

Came up trumps alongside John Terry this season which earned him high praise from Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho. Mr Reliable and sure to be a sturdy force in England's defence for years to come.

DEF
Phil Jagielka
  • Phil Jagielka
  • Age 31
  • Club Everton
  • Caps 24
  • Goals 1

Looked set for a summer on the settee a few weeks ago but the Everton man has undergone a remarkable recovery from injury to make the grade. Has scored one international goal to date from the back - against Italy in 2012.

DEF
Glen Johnson
  • Glen Johnson
  • Age 29
  • Club Liverpool
  • Caps 50
  • Goals 1

Liverpool's Gary Neville? Maybe not, but has flourished under Brendan Rodgers and looks to be playing with a new lease of life. Expect him to link well with Sturridge and Sterling in a Liverpool-tinted side.

DEF
Phil Jones
  • Phil Jones
  • Age 22
  • Club Man. Utd
  • Caps 9
  • Goals 0

A competent defender, if a little gung-ho, who pulls the best on-pitch gurns in Premier League football. Was a major doubt after dislocating his shoulder in United's win against Hull, but is included regardless.

DEF
Luke Shaw
  • Luke Shaw
  • Age 18
  • Club Southampton
  • Caps 1
  • Goals 0

A superb season has seen Shaw heavily linked with several of the Premier League's elite. Made his senior international debut in March, but came up through the England ranks. A supreme, well-grounded talent hungry for more.

DEF
Chris Smalling
  • Chris Smalling
  • Age 24
  • Club Man. Utd
  • Caps 10
  • Goals 0

Not had the best of seasons with Manchester United but his versatility is key; Smalling can play both in the centre of defence or on the right. Will provide essential squad cover in what will be testing conditions for Hodgson's men.

MID
Ross Barkley
  • Ross Barkley
  • Age 20
  • Club Everton
  • Caps 1
  • Goals 0

The new Paul Gascoigne, minus the tears and controversy. Influential in Everton's superb season under Roberto Martinez and an exciting prospect. Will go to Brazil with no fear - exactly what England will need.

MID
Steven Gerrard
  • Steven Gerrard
  • Age 34
  • Club Liverpool
  • Caps 109
  • Goals 21

Despite a recent slip-up, he was the driving force behind Liverpool's title challenge from a deeper midfield role. Has the opportunity to join David Beckham as the only other English player to score in three different World Cup tournaments.

MID
Jordan Henderson
  • Jordan Henderson
  • Age 23
  • Club Liverpool
  • Caps 8
  • Goals 0

Berated for woeful performances after his big-money move from Sunderland to Liverpool, Henderson is yet another player to have been revived by Brendan Rodgers. Can he transpose that form on to the international stage?

MID
Adam Lallana
  • Adam Lallana
  • Age 26
  • Club Southampton
  • Caps 3
  • Goals 0

An absolute shoo-in for a seat on the plane following a superb season at Southampton. Calm in possession but explosive in attack, Lallana's form for club - and now country - has excited many. Will no doubt lead the next generation.

MID
Frank Lampard
  • Frank Lampard
  • Age 35
  • Club Chelsea
  • Caps 103
  • Goals 29

Will be looking to banish the memories of 2010 when his 'goal' was not given against Germany. An England stalwart since he earned his first cap in 1999 - amazingly, this will only be Lampard's third World Cup.

MID
James Milner
  • James Milner
  • Age 28
  • Club Man. City
  • Caps 45
  • Goals 1

England's forgotten man. While he may not be a regular starter in Brazil, expect industrious and valuable contributions from the bench. A worker with an enormous engine, Milner offers as much in defence as he does in attack.

MID
A. Ox.-Chamberlain
  • A. Ox.-Chamberlain
  • Age 20
  • Club Arsenal
  • Caps 14
  • Goals 3

Exciting winger with the capacity to hurt big teams - just ask Brazil. The experience of being called up for Euro 2012 will stand 'The Ox' in good stead. His pace will cause problems, particularly if he comes off the bench against weary legs.

MID
Raheem Sterling
  • Raheem Sterling
  • Age 19
  • Club Liverpool
  • Caps 2
  • Goals 0

Sterling was branded one of Europe's best youngsters by Brendan Rodgers. Hodgson needs to avoid repeating the mistake Sven-Goran Eriksson made in 2006, when he took Theo Walcott and never played him.

MID
Jack Wilshere
  • Jack Wilshere
  • Age 22
  • Club Arsenal
  • Caps 15
  • Goals 0

Wilshere recently returned to full training after he suffered a broken foot while on England duty in March. Arsene Wenger long insisted the midfielder would be fit enough to be at Hodgson's disposal and is now set to shine again on the world stage.

FW
Rickie Lambert
  • Rickie Lambert
  • Age 32
  • Club Southampton
  • Caps 4
  • Goals 2

In true Roy of the Rovers style, Lambert has worked his way up from the doldrums of League Two to Premier League stardom. He scored with his very first touch during his England debut in August and is worthy of his place.

FW
Wayne Rooney
  • Wayne Rooney
  • Age 28
  • Club Man. Utd
  • Caps 89
  • Goals 38

Arguably England's most dangerous player. Even at 28, Rooney has two World Cups under his belt and yet has never scored at the finals. Injury hampered him in South Africa and Germany - is this finally his moment?

FW
Daniel Sturridge
  • Daniel Sturridge
  • Age 24
  • Club Liverpool
  • Caps 10
  • Goals 3

One half of Liverpool's potent SAS strikeforce, Sturridge pitched in with 21 goals this season. Rejuvenated under Brendan Rodgers, the striker has been nothing short of brilliant for Liverpool this season. Will scare defenders at any level.

FW
Danny Welbeck
  • Danny Welbeck
  • Age 23
  • Club Man. Utd
  • Caps 21
  • Goals 8

Picked by Hodgson for Euro 2012, Welbeck scored more goals for England last season than he did for Manchester United. Quick, strong and good in the air, the striker has eight international goals in 21 appearances.

Reserves

John Ruddy - Did his level best to keep Norwich in the Premier League with some outstanding performances, but it was not enough for his club or for his ambitions to make the cut for England either.

Jon Flanagan - The 21-year-old has impressed since breaking into the Liverpool first team, but is yet to make his senior debut for the England senior side. Has featured at Under-19 and U21 level, but is still eligible to represent Ireland if he wishes.

John Stones - A surprise, even as a standby, but the Everton defender has been superb for Roberto Martinez and would merit inclusion if the call comes.

Michael Carrick - Carrick makes Hodgson's squad despite failing to shine throughout a torrid season of club football at United. However, at 32, Carrick provides notable experience for the squad's youngsters to draw on. Will play his part, albeit a small one.

Tom Cleverley - The target of heavy criticism this season; Hodgson had to defend the United midfielder after fans created an online poll insisting he should be banned from this very squad. Has a point to prove.

Andy Carroll - Featured in England's last major tournament and proved to be a danger while leading the line. A physical presence, he scored against Sweden at Euro 2012 and has the physique to cause plenty of problems.

Jermain Defoe - Defoe quit the Premier League for the MLS in January and has impressed for his new side Toronto, having scored three in four games. Scored in the last World Cup against Algeria to send England into the last 16.
