Esteban Ocon seemed on course for Formula One since his karting days, with his huge success at national and international level moving him to single seaters in 2012. He finished 14th in that season's Formula Renault 2.0 before switching to ART Junior Team the following year -- a maiden victory in the series was his reward as he finished third overall.
Ocon was soon snapped up by Lotus and placed on its young driver programme, before going on to claim the 2014 European Formula 3 crown ahead of Tom Blomqvist and Max Verstappen. He was overlooked for a reserve driver role at Lotus for 2015 but Mercedes saw potential in him and signed him up as he went on to claim the 2015 GP3 title.
In 2016 he was placed in DTM for the first ten races of the season before an opportunity appeared to replace Rio Haryanto in Manor's F1 team. He was pitched against fellow Mercedes junior Pascal Wehrlein and held his own despite joining the team mid-season.
A test with Force India followed at the end of the year and his performance convinced the team to sign him as Nico Hulkenberg's replacement for 2017. With a full pre-season of testing behind him, Ocon upped his game once more and proved to be a worthy rival for Sergio Perez.
Strengths and Weaknesses
Ocon has proved quick and consistent in Formula One and scored points at all but two rounds in his first full season in 2017. His likeable character has also made him a favourite within his team.
