Wales have released Cardiff Blues wing Tom James from their Rugby World Cup training squad due to injury.

James had been a surprise inclusion in coach Warren Gatland's initial squad and will now return to his region to continue rehabilitation on an ongoing foot problem.

The Wales squad will assemble at their Vale of Glamorgan base on Monday as they prepare for their first warm-up match against Ireland in Cardiff on Saturday.

Gatland also has injury concerns in the back-three over Liam Williams, while last week he rated prop Samson Lee's chances of making the tournament as "touch and go".

The New Zealander will trim his initial 47-man training squad following the game with Ireland, with the final 31-man party set to be named on the Aug. 31 deadline.

Wales have prepared for this autumn's tournament with gruelling training camps in Switzerland and Qatar.
