Former Wallabies pro Salesi Ma'afu will appear in a French court next month to face charges over an alleged assault linked to a carpark bust-up.

The 32-year-old prop has a September 8 date at Toulon's criminal court after being accused of "violence with a weapon" - the weapon being his car, a local prosecutor told AFP on Tuesday.

The Toulon player, capped 14 times, is believed to have been involved in a heated dispute over a parking place on August 16 and to have hit someone with his car and another person who attempted to intervene, the prosecutor added. Ma'afu was taken into custody on Monday.

He has not sparkled in pre-season friendlies since he joined the three-time European champions from English side Northampton, and only came on for the last half hour of the opening day 27-22 defeat to Racing-Metro on Friday.
