Howarth classed as Welsh for club games

Newport have succeeded as having Shane Howarth classed as 'Welsh' for club matches after they asked for clarification over his status from the WRU.
The Black and Ambers had been advised before their Cup quarter final defeat by Llanelli that they could not play the new Zealand born full back, who is at the centre of the 'grannygate' affair, and all four of their overseas registered players in the same match.
Although he definitely has an English grandparent he cannot apply for a British passport until he has lived in the UK for three years - which under the present regulations would mean he would have to be classified as an overseas player. However the WRU meeting on Thursday evening has made his case a special circumstance and the club and the player are said to be "relieved" at the decision. "It is justice. We had brought him to Newport as a Wales player at the behest of the WRU and in good faith. The whole thing had threatened to get out of hand.," said the club's Chief Executive, Tony Brown.
