Canterbury go into Saturday's Ranfurly Shield clash against Waikato in Hamilton without All Black hooker Mark Hammett and utility back Leon MacDonald.

Hammett has a groin injury and MacDonald a damaged ankle. But such is the strength of Canterbury rugby that able replacements are able to step up. Experienced campaigner Matt Sexton takes the hooking spot and exciting youngster Ben Blair continues to deputise at full back for MacDonald. He is also expected to continue with the goal kicking duties which he has taken over from Andrew Mehrtens. The All Black fly half will play but a thigh injury is restricting his ability to place kick. Blair has done a suprb job in recent weeks.

The Canterbury side is as follows :

Ben Blair, Marika Vunibaka, Mark Robinson, Caleb Ralph, Daryl Gibson ( captain ), Andrew Mehrtens, Justin Marshall, Sam Broomhall, Scott Robertson, Norm Maxwell, Todd Blackadder, Reuben Thorne, Greg Somerville, Matt Sexton, David Hewett

Rserves : Afato So'oalo, Mark Mayerhofler, Ben Hurst, Dallas Seymour, Chris Jack, Greg Feek, Sean Cuttance
