As widely expected, Welsh international Mike Phillips is planning to take legal action against Bayonne following his sacking.

Phillips had the last eight months of his contract terminated after he reportedly turned up under the influence of alcohol for a video training session. It was not the first time he had crossed swords with the club.

"As a result of discussions with my legal team in France I have now instructed them to issue proceedings against Aviron Bayonnais Rugby Club," Phillips said in a statement. "I am extremely disappointed and frustrated by the decision taken ... to terminate my employment. I was also disappointed by the fact that I officially heard about my dismissal through an interview given in a French newspaper this morning."

The interview he referred to was given on Monday by Bayonne's chairman Alain Afflelou. He told Sud Ouest that Phillips' actions were "inexcusable" and described them as "treason", adding he wanted to fire Phillips as soon as he was advised of what had happened but realised he had to wait until there had been a disciplinary hearing.

Asked about reports Phillips was considering legal action, Afflelou said he did not expect to be faced with paying compensation. "We'll let the lawyers do their work but I don't think so. He is a repeat offender and has been laid off for misconduct."

Phillips said he "will wholeheartedly concentrate all my energy and efforts on training with Wales and try to earn a place in the match day squad to help Wales have a successful autumn campaign against South Africa, Australia, Argentina and Tonga".
