Bayonne president Alain Afflelou has pulled the plug on plans for a merger with fellow Basque side Biarritz. The two sides are currently languishing in the lower half of the Top 14 and Afflelou confirmed last week the two teams were looking into the possibility of merging their resources at the professional level. But six days on and the Bayonne man has already distanced his team from any possible link-up with Biarritz. The news was originally met with outcry from both sets of supporters and for the time being, it looks as if the two teams will remain rivals rather than colleagues. "The conditions mentioned in our first exchange are no longer present," Afflelou said. "I cannot agree to take our club, which is legally, economically and fiscally healthy up a blind path. "After consultation with the majority shareholders, members of the supervisory board and representatives of the fans, the conditions envisaged have not been met. I have decided to end these discussions."
