La Rochelle secured promotion to the Top 14 thanks to a 31-22 win over Agen in the PRO D2 play-off final in Bordeaux on Sunday.

At one stage of the match, it looked like La Rochelle were going to embarrass Agen as they were 31-3 ahead following tries from Damien Cler, a penalty try and one from Sireli Bobo. But Agen mounted a fightback and scored three of their own but it was not enough to pin the eventual winners back.

"It's a happy, marvellous ending," said La Rochelle president Vincent Merling. "We've been working tirelessly since 2011 to return to the Top 14. We dominated the first-half but then got frightened, Agen came back with extraordinary speed. But we've made it. I've got less fear now of going up to the Top 14."
