What's the biggest winning margin for a European Cup quarter final match? Tony Price, England

Northampton's 37-5 defeat by Clermont Auvergne in this year's quarters was the fifth-heaviest margin suffered by a team at this stage.

The most emphatic quarter-final win was by Stade Francais over Pontypridd in 1998-99. The Frenchmen beat the Welshmen 71-14.

There were no quarter-final stages in the inaugural tournament, in 1995-96. Since then, there have been eight wins by more than 30 points:

  • 71-14 - Stade Francais v Pontypridd - 1999
  • 51-10 - Toulouse v Harlequins - 1998
  • 48-8 - Stade Francais v Newcastle - 2005
  • 43-9 - Munster v Ospreys 2009 - 32
  • 37-5 - Clermont-Auvergne v Northampton - 2015
  • 41-10 - Leicester v Swansea - 2001
  • 34-3 - Wasps v Gloucester - 2004
  • 34-3 - Leinster v Cardiff - 2012
