Cowan is on a familiar upward trajectory in Australian rugby, having established himself in the Super 14 arena before representating Australia A and then breaking through for his first Australia caps in 2009.
The prop made his international debut against Italy in Melbourne, before coming off the bench twice in the 2009 Tri-Nations series, impressing coach Robbie Deans enough to earn selection for the end-of-year tour.
New Zealand-born Cowan holds a historic place as a foundation member of the Western Force Super 14 team, but his development was interrupted by a broken leg suffered in 2007. Since returning from that set-back, Cowan has gone from strength to strength for his club and now his country.
