France's tour hopes have been dealt a further blow with the news that centre Mathieu Bastareaud will not face the Springboks after picking up an injury during training.

The giant Stade Francais centre was one of the stars of France's Grand Slam season but has been forced to withdraw with a groin problem. His place in the squad has been taken by Lionel Mazars of Bayonne.

Bastareaud's withdrawal follows hot on the heels of his inspirational centre partner Yannick Jauzion, while Biarritz No.8 Imanol Harinordoquy is also an injury casualty following a bruising season.

Marc Lievremont's centre options are still potent, with Florian Fritz replacing Jauzion in the squad and Perpignan duo Maxime Mermoz and David Marty knocking on the door prior to Saturday's first Test.
