France and Stade Français hooker Dimitri Szarzewski is facing up to three months on the sidelines after learning that he will have to have surgery on an Achilles tendon injury.

The 27-year-old, who has won 48 caps for his country, missed France's autumn internationals due to a similar injury and he was not considered for selection for the Six Nations because of the recurring problem.

After consulting a number of specialists the decision was taken to have surgery, ruling him out of France's entire Six Nations campaign as well as Stade's Amlin Cup drive. But he is still hopeful of being fit to fight for a place in France's World Cup squad which is named on May 11.

"This decision was taken to be able to play as soon as possible for Stade Français and to be ready in time for the World Cup," said Szarzewski.

Perpignan hooker Guilhem Guirado was named in the current Six Nations squad as the understudy to Toulouse stalwart William Servat.
