Gloucester are understood to have held talks with former hooker Olivier Azam over their vacant head coach position.

According to the Gloucester Citizen, chief executive Stephen Vaughan met Azam last weekend and also sat down for talks with defence guru Dave Ellis. The club have been looking for a replacement for Nigel Davies, who was sacked as director of rugby following a disappointing season at Kingsholm.

Azam has already admitted he would be interested in a return to Gloucester, although he cast doubt on how soon that would be given his coaching commitments to newly-promoted French side Lyon.

"I will come back to Gloucester one day to take the reins of the club, that is for sure. When the time is right for me and my family I will come back," he said.

A move for Azam is sure to go down well with Gloucester fans after the hooker spent a decade over two stints with the club. He has impressed as a coach in France, first as a forwards specialist with Toulon and then as head coach with Lyon, whom he guided to promotion to the Top 14 with a record number of points.
