England centre Luther Burrell has admitted frustration over the competition for a place in Stuart Lancaster's final 31-man World Cup squad.

With rugby league convert Sam Burgess and Henry Slade both impressing during England's opening warm-up victory against France last weekend, pressure is now on Burrell to prove his credentials.

The Northampton star has been paired with Jonathan Joseph for the reverse fixture against Les Bleus in Paris on Saturday, with Lancaster warning "players like him must deliver on the big stage."

Burrell told the Telegraph: "There were seven or eight centres in the first three weeks of training camp and they are all quality players.

"It is quite frustrating as a centre that we have got so many players coming through but it keeps you on your toes and keeps you grounded and grafting hard. It is brutal in an international squad.

"Nobody is irreplaceable so you have to stay in peak form and try to stay one step ahead at all times. Whatever combination they decide to go with, the balance and quality will be there."

Burrell will take comfort in playing alongside Joseph at the Stade de France, with the pair having linked up so well during England's 2015 Six Nations campaign: their impressive partnership aided a haul of 18 tries during the tournament.

"I think there was a nice balance between me and JJ and hopefully we can continue that relationship," Burrell added.

"I think during the last Six Nations we managed to score some of our best tries and we topped the championship in terms of tries scored, which was a fantastic achievement for us and the brand of rugby we want to be playing."
