World Rugby has presented Sonny Bill Williams with a new winners' medal after he gave his away in the moments following Saturday night's Rugby World Cup final.

Williams handed his medal to 15-year-old Charlie Lines after the youngster was floored by a security guard having run on to the field to greet the All Blacks during their lap of honour. The child's family later offered Williams his medal back but he said the memories were enough.

The act received widespread acclaim from around the world and the game's organising body marked the sign of generosity by handing Williams a replacement medal on Sunday evening at their awards dinner in Battersea.

Williams was taken aback by the gesture, saying: "I am very surprised, the other boys would've done the same thing."

He added: "Also Liam Messam gave him his beanie and is wondering whether he can get a replacement."

Only takes one thing to change someone's life. Enjoy it Charlie bro
