Israel Folau's prospective move to the centres is on hold, with the Wallabies full-back set to wear the No.15 jersey in his return from ankle surgery for the NSW Waratahs.

Waratahs coach Daryl Gibson had suggested Kurtley Beale could shift to full-back, but Folau will again play there in Friday's Super Rugby trial against the Highlanders in Queenstown.

"Fifteen is probably the position that I know I'll be playing at this stage (in the trial). I'm not even sure whether I'll play there (outside centre) at all," Folau told Fairfax Media.

The 26-year-old began his rugby union career on the wing after shifting from the AFL in 2013, before shifting to the back in his sixth game for the Wallabies.

He has since played 32 Tests in the position, as well as helping the Waratahs to the 2014 Super Rugby title while wearing No.15.

"Definitely my preferred position is full-back," Folau said.

"I've spent most of my time playing there so that's where I feel most comfortable."
