Paul Sampson's move back to London Wasps has been confirmed by the Zurich Premiership's second from bottom side.

With two losses against Leicester and Bath and just one point from the opening two fixtures of the league Wasps desperately needed to bring in some cover in the backs after injuries to key players.

Sampsom, a flyer who moved to the Wakefield Wildcats back in February, had been targeted for a return by Wasps' director of rugby Nigel Melville.

The 23-year-old former England schools player who has one cap for England has signed a two-year contract with Wasps who retained his registration and picked him on the bench for Sunday's clash with Bath.

Wasps are also looking to bring in a scrum-half with the recent departure of Mike Friday to London rivals NEC Harlequins. At the weekend Alex Page, a member of the club's under-21 side started on the bench but a more experienced backup for first choice Martyn Wood is being sought.

Lawrence Dallaglio is set for a return against Gloucester on September 17 but other Wasps will have to be patient for the return of their other long-term casualties hooker Trevor Leota and fly-half Alex King.
