Ambitious Top 14 side Montpellier have been dealt a blow with the news that President Phillipe Deffins has resigned after less than a month in charge.

Deffins took the reins on December 18 and immediately signalled his lofty aims by declaring that the side would win the Top 14 within three years. The club have also recently been linked with several high-profile transfer targets, including Sebastien Chabal and Lionel Nallet, while French international fullback Benjamin Thierry signed for the club earlier on Tuesday.

Two damaging defeats, 34-0 away to Toulouse and 30-3 at home to Clermont Auvergne, appear to have ended Deffins' ambition with the club.

"Perhaps I'm responsible for the pressure that is weighing on the players' shoulders," he told French media outlets. "I admit my part of the responsibility (for the two losses) at the same title as the players and the management. I admit my guilt."
