Toulon have announced the signing of Mathieu Bastareaud after the French international was granted an early release from his contract with Stade Francais.

The powerful centre had been hoping to force through a move to Toulon for weeks but the deal was being held up by Stade's refusal to allow one of their star players to leave before his contract with the club had expired.

However, after a meeting between Stade's new president, Thomas Savare, and his Toulon counterpart Mourad Boudjellal in Carcassonne on Thursday the transfer was given the green light.

Bastareaud has agreed a three-year contract with his new employers and now looks set to form a mouth-watering midfield partnership with another high-profile arrival at Toulon, Wallaby star Matt Giteau, who will move to France after this year's World Cup.
