Toulon have secured another major transfer coup with the signing of legendary Australian flanker George Smith for the 2010-11 season.

The Top 14 side, who narrowly missed out on silverware in both the league and European Challenge Cup this season, have signed the 110-cap Wallaby prior to their first Heineken Cup campaign.

Smith left the Brumbies at the end of the Super 14 season, having announced his retirement from the Test arena in February. He will now form a formidable back-row unit with Springbok Joe van Niekerk and Pumas No.8 Juan Martin Fernandez Lobbe.

Toulon have already announed high-profile signings this summer in the form of All Black tight-head Carl Hayman and England wing Paul Sackey.

In a glittering career in Australia Smith tasted Super Rugby glory on two occasions, won Player of the Year awards in 2006 and 2009, four consecutive Australian Super 14 Player of the Year honours and numerous Brett Robinson accolades as the Brumbies' most valuable player.

He is currently on tour with the Barbarians and will start in the No.7 jersey when the famous invitational side take on Ireland at Thomond Park on Friday night.
