Another crisis is brewing in the upper echelons of French rugby, with Bourgoin's Top 14 future in the balance amid fresh financial wrangling.

Montauban recently suffered the ignominy of being relegated to the lower reaches of the French amateur system, after being unable to provide evidence that they could clear their reported €1.7m financial shortfall within the confines of their season budget, and according to the league's financial watchdog, DNACG, Bourgoin will follow after being denied a professional licence.

The club has been included in next season's fixture list and are set to appeal to the Fédération Française de Rugby (FFR) over the decision, claiming to have reversed the financial plight that dogged them during last season's league campaign.

At one point the players accepted a 20% pay cut while 12 of their number had their playing licences blocked. Despite their off-field strife they showed admirable grit and determination throughout, picking up league wins over heavyweights Perpignan, Toulouse, Biarritz, Castres and Racing Metro, whom they beat home and away.

Reports in Midi Olympique suggest that Bourgoin will begin legal proceedings against the Ligue National de Rugby (LNR) over their treatment, insisting that they have made sufficient financial guarantees to ensure their place in the top flight.
