Darren Edwards has been named as the new head coach of the Newport Gwent Dragons, with Robert Beale taking the role of director of rugby.

Edwards, the Wales Under-20 coach, has been with the Dragons since signing up as backs coach in 2009. He took over as acting head coach in February following the departure of Paul Turner by 'mutual consent'.

A former scrum-half for Newport, London Welsh, London Irish and Leeds, Edwards has overseen a run of five wins, four losses and a draw since taking temporary charge.

"Darren was given an opportunity to prove himself earlier in the season and he has seized it with both hands," Dragons chief executive Mike Jenkins said.

Edwards will manage the senior regional side, while Beale will be responsible for the long-term development and management of rugby in the region in his role as director of rugby.

"Although Rob's role hasn't changed through this appointment, his responsibilities and the important part he is playing in the long-term development of Dragons rugby has been clarified through this change in title," Jenkins said.

"We have a vibrant, talented coaching team here and both Darren and Rob have shown that they have the skill and knowledge to guide our regional setup to the next level."
