Kevin Magnussen said he did his best to avoid the first corner accident with Felipe Massa at the first corner of the German Grand Prix but was left with nowhere to go.

Magnussen was on the inside of Massa at Turn 1 before they made contact, flipping the Williams into a roll and out of the race. Massa blamed Magnussen for the collision but the McLaren driver said he was left with nowhere to go.

"A real pity: I think I could've had a decent race if I hadn't had the accident at Turn 1," he said. "I need to see a replay of the accident, but I feel that, if I'd had somewhere to go, then there wouldn't have been contact with Felipe. I did my best to try and avoid the accident, but there wasn't much else I could do."

Magnussen had qualified fourth and said he felt the car was capable of much more than his eventual ninth-place finish.

"I'm not sure how much was down to the upgrades, but the car as a whole was working pretty well. Especially the rear tyres were holding on very well, which is something new for this car because it's usually a big problem to keep the rears alive and traction is normally a big problem. Today it was alright, so some positives to take away as well."
