Dustin Johnson has pulled out of The Masters on account of injury.

In the last three years, Johnson has placed in the top 10 at major championships on four occasions, including two top-five finishes and one runner-up at the Open Championship. In three previous trips to Augusta National, a tie for 30th is Johnson's best result. He will not get the chance to improve on that due to a back injury.

"First I have to apologise to the fans and sponsors," Johnson wrote on Twitter. "With heartfelt regret, I won't be playing in The Masters due to a tweaked back.

"You have no idea how much I wanted to walk the fairways at Augusta and fulfill what I've been practicing for!! I'll have to root my buddies!"

Prior to the 76th edition of The Masters, he had enjoyed three top-ten finishes out of five appearances on the PGA Tour this season.

The world No. 12's withdrawal means the field at Augusta is down to 96 players.
